The idea behind the routine
Korean skincare is less about the number of products and more about sequence and gentleness: remove everything properly, clean without stripping, hydrate in thin layers, and protect. A four or five step routine done consistently beats a ten step routine you abandon in a fortnight.
The order, and why
1. Oil cleanser (evening only)
Sunscreen, makeup and the day's sebum are oil-soluble. An oil or balm cleanser dissolves them so your second cleanse can actually reach your skin. Massage onto dry skin, add water to emulsify, then rinse.
2. Low pH water cleanser
Healthy skin sits at around pH 5. A low pH gel or foam cleanses without pushing your skin alkaline, which is what causes that tight, squeaky feeling people mistake for cleanliness. Use morning and evening.
3. Exfoliating or hydrating toner pads
AHA works on the surface, BHA gets into oily pores. Toner pads make this easy to dose. Two or three times a week is plenty for most people; daily use is for oily, resilient skin only.
4. Hydrating serum or mist-serum
Thin, watery layers absorb better than one heavy layer. A spray or first-essence style serum is the fastest way to add hydration without a greasy finish.
5. Moisturiser and daytime sunscreen
Seal the hydration in, and in the morning finish with sunscreen. Without SPF the rest of the routine is working uphill.
Matching products to your skin
- Sensitive or easily tight — low pH cleansers, centella-based formulas, fewer acids.
- Oily or combination — a foam cleanser with sebum control and a BHA-containing pad a few times a week.
- Dry or dehydrated — lean on layered hydration and keep exfoliation occasional.
Common mistakes
- Adding every new product at once, so you cannot tell what caused a reaction.
- Exfoliating daily because the pads are convenient.
- Skipping the second cleanse and wondering why serums seem to do nothing.
- Judging results in three days. Skin turnover takes weeks.
Important considerations
Patch test anything with acids, introduce one product at a time, and stop using something that stings persistently. Ingredient lists and formulations get updated, so check the current listing on Amazon before buying, especially if you have known sensitivities.
