Work out what you are actually treating
- Dull, rough, frizzy hair is usually a cuticle problem: heat, colour and friction have lifted the outer layer so light scatters instead of reflecting. Smoothing and protein-based treatments help.
- Breakage looks like thinning but is damage part-way down the strand. You will see short broken hairs and split ends.
- Thinning at the root is about density and scalp condition. Shampoos cannot regrow hair, but scalp-focused formulas and gentler washing reduce further loss from breakage and buildup.
What each product type does
Leave-in silk protein serums
A few drops on damp mid-lengths and ends smooth the cuticle, cut frizz and make blow-drying and detangling easier. Use sparingly — the most common complaint about serums is over-application, which flattens fine hair.
Sulfate-free biotin shampoo and conditioner
Sulfate-free surfactants clean without stripping colour or natural oils, and botanical or biotin blends target scalp condition and the look of fullness. Expect gradual differences over weeks of consistent use, not an overnight change.
Heat protection and technique
Lowering your dryer temperature, using a nozzle and finishing on cool does more for shine than any single bottle. Rough towel-drying is a bigger cause of frizz than most people realise.
A routine that works for most hair
- 1Wash with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo, focusing on the scalp rather than the lengths.
- 2Condition the mid-lengths and ends, leave for a couple of minutes, rinse cool.
- 3Squeeze out water with a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt.
- 4Work two or three drops of leave-in serum through damp ends.
- 5Dry with moderate heat and finish cool.
Best suited for
- Frizz, colour-treated or heat-styled hair — a silk protein leave-in treatment.
- Fine hair that looks flat or thinning — a sulfate-free biotin shampoo and conditioner set used consistently.
Important considerations
No topical product treats medical hair loss; persistent or sudden shedding is worth discussing with a doctor. Fragrance and botanical blends can irritate sensitive scalps, so check the current ingredient list on the Amazon listing before buying.
